Irene is the Greek goddess of peace(And maybe the same goddess of Ireland for Ireland gets its name from her, Eire) and it is from this that we get the word “serene” …yet this Hurricane of Peace made super power USA unsettled … irony that Science is connected the Spirit world as secular scientists naming storms ..that is a religious practice not a secular practice.Yet science employs a lot from Greek Religion.
Hurricane Irene has gone with the lives of dozen and property but we thank God ,the devastation was not as was expected, grand hurricanegeddon. This is proof that we can still pray and God can divert a disaster .Amen.Nonetheless , we have noticed an interesting link between Hurricanes , Mythology and Gender.
Ever wondered why hurricanes are given names ? Well scientists chose to give names to storms as they realised that these storms had different natures and features which deserved to be remembered .Secondly , it aids in recording the history of storms and hurricanes.
Yet as scientists began to notice the different characteristics of these hurricanes for some reason they gave them Feminine names .That reason was , like feminine temperament, unpredictability marked the common feature of the storms seen through the sudden shifting directions of the wind .
The first named hurricanes of the Atlantic recorded in 1953 bore female names.

This is the same thought that existed in Western Europe and America during the witch hunts .It was an extrapolation of Paul’s teaching that women should not teach God’s word because Eve was deceived by Satan.Paul was talking about teaching but Christianity succeeding him extended it to all areas.
Yet when we see in the Old Testament that no woman in the tribe of Levi served as a priest of God but only as a prophetess .However the New testament has called all men and women priests (though the timing of this is of great debate as John in Revelation says God has made Christians kings and priests ..made is past tense , yet Christians are to rule when Jesus comes and not before !)
This Sexualization of Science and Knowledge is also seen in other arenas like Law , weher you have Ferae Naturae ( wild animals) and Mansueta Naturae ( domesticated animals) ; ferae , which is a feminine word means wild and mans, a masculine word meaning tamed .Thus solidfying that the feminine acts by whims or spirit while the masculine acts with reason or rules.
Yet reality is far from such classifications ; though classes of wild and tame are real , the sexualization of them is false as we find men get quite wild , if not more than women. How many women did you see advancing to Tripoli with the rebels ?
Thus Western Thought , being Patriarchal having adopted Christianity which is Patriarchal , spilled over to science and thus bad things were only connected to women.
Of course this changed in the 60s when scientists decided to name hurricanes with male names .What took them so long when the same science suggests that testosterone, the male hormone is equivalent to aggression and force, which is a characteristic of storms.
MANY POLY THEISTIC SOCIETIES ARE BOTH PATRIARCHAL AND MATRIACHAL … ONLY JUDAISM AND ISLAM ARE PATRIARCHAL WITH MODERN CHRISTIANITY FROM THE CATHOLIC ERA BEING BOTH
PATRIARCHAL AND MATRIARCHAL
Yet this culture of naming forces of nature is not new but ancient . Almost all world cultures either took Patriarchal perspective towards the supernatural or a Matriarchal perspective or a mixture of both.
For example Hinduism has taken a mixture with rivers and mountains bearing names of gods and goddesses .This applies to Western paganism and also Greek Mythology.
However a look at Middle Eastern thought such as Jews ,Arabs and Early Christianity, there is no mention of female names in connection to the supernatural.
For in the Bible God is both compared to as a mother hen taking care of her chicks and a father who disciplines his son.
Thus in some tribes in Africa the deity took the Masculine perspective but the people took the feminine .This is similar to Bible thought where God is seen as the husband and the people his wife.
Or like the Kikuyu , their God Ngai is seen as masculine while the family names took up feminine names. So it is both a patriarchal and matriarchal society.
If you thought that the science you have studied for years is not connected to mythology and gender ….THINK AGAIN …. Science is connected with the Spirit world , that is why Ivy League Scientists , use the names of Greek gods and Goddesses names to name Hurricanes.Yet they separate the two.

http://geography.about.com/od/lists/a/2012hurricane.htm
Below you will find the listing of hurricane names for the Atlantic Ocean for the year 2012. For every year, there is a pre-approved list of tropical storm and hurricane names. These lists have been generated by the National Hurricane Center since 1953. At first, the lists consisted of only female names; however, since 1979, the lists alternate between male and female.
Hurricanes are named alphabetically from the list in chronological order. Thus the first tropical storm or hurricane of the year has a name that begins with “A” and the second is given the name that begins with “B.” The lists contain hurricane names that begin from A to W, but exclude names that begin with a “Q” or “U.”
There are six lists that continue to rotate. The lists only change when there is a hurricane that is so devastating, the name is retired and another hurricane name replaces it. As there were no significant hurricanes in 2006, the 2012 hurricane name list is the same as the 2006 hurricane name list.
